With contracts for teachers, drivers and support staff all due to expire June 30, the Blackduck School Board gave no indication Monday of what, if any, negotiations have taken place, but did indirectly acknowledge that time is running short.
With little discussion, it moved to extend for one year, the benefits package for all three groups. At least one of the extensions includes agreement not to reduce health insurance plans from those currently in place.

The fifth annual Blackduck Chamber of Commerce Backwoods Bash will be held Aug. 16 with most events at the wayside rest located off Hwy. 71.
The festivities begin with the 5k Run, Walk, Waddle or Flop registration at 8 a.m. with the event beginning at 9 a.m.
There will be a pancake feed hosted by the Blackduck High School German and Spanish clubs from 8:30-10:30 a.m.
The grand parade begins at noon sharp on Main Street.
Starting at 1 p.m., activities include a climbing wall, gladiator joust, dual sport equilizer, bounce houses, petting zoo, face painting, beer garden, food vendors and much more!
Kids games will be held from 1-2 p.m. sponsored by Little Lambs Learning Center. Activities invlude a three legged race, duck pond and a sawdust dig. There will be prizes to be won by those participating.
Cheer on your favorite fire department at 2:30 p.m. as teams from different areas compete against each other in a contest of skill in the fire department water contest.
Is all the activity making you hungry? Food vendors will be there ready to serve you all day and there will be a sweet corn feed in the pavilion at the wayside rest at 5 p.m. This feed is being sponsored by Faith Lutheran Church of Blackduck.
Still in for more fun? Dance the night away! A teen dance will be held at the fire hall on Margaret Ave. from 8-11 p.m. and for those of you over 21, head down to the party at The Pond located off Hwy. 71. Music by Brave New World begins at 9 p.m.

Hundreds of volunteers and investigation personnel frantically searched for a 10-year-old Blackduck boy who was reported missing Monday afternoon, only to find him safely at a friend’s home in Kelliher hours later.
Angello Bell of Blackduck, was reported last seen around noon Monday by his mother, Renee. She contacted the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Department after her son failed return home around 3 p.m.
Reports were sent out, alerts were issued and along with authorities, volunteers from the community and surrounding areas assisted in the search for Angello.
According to Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp, the entire ordeal was a simple misunderstanding.
Over 40 foresters and loggers piled into the Blackduck Senior Center Tuesday to participate in an auction sale of stumpage on state lands in the Blackduck area.
During the sale, two separate auctions were held. The first, a regular timber auction with 11 tracts available for bid was open to all loggers and area mills. Several large area companies such as Boise and Northern Logging obtained timber through this portion of the auction.
The second, an intermediate timber sale, was available only to logging companies with seven or fewer permanent employees. This auction had 37 tracts available for bid.
Thrivent-Habitat home groundbreaking ceremony held On June 6, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity home was held in Blackduck. The home, located at 143 Brandl Ave. NW, will be owned by Pat Wiedel when it is completed. Construction work for volunteers will begin June 25 if the weather is favorable. Anyone who would like to volunteer in the construction of this home or serve lunches for the crew should contact Jonette Anderson at 835-4453 or Bonnie Jevning at 751-3118. Everyone is welcome to help and construction will be done on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until completed. The Kelliher City Council met for its regular meeting June 2 with a full agenda.
Mayor Darin Latterell called the meeting to order then a motion was made to amend the agenda by adding Upkeep of Vacant Lots.
Mike Washenberger was present to address the council regarding running a tab at the liquor store for a graduation party. The party will be held at Paul Bunyan Park and the city clerk indicated that he would have to pay for the tab in advance as the liquor store does not allow tabs to be run. The council had no objections.
The Beltrami County Highway Department closed part of County Road 41, north of Blackduck earlier this spring due to excessive spring runoff. The runoff itself is nothing new to that stretch of road however, this year, it washed out the temporary culvert that had been put into place last September.
The road was closed in late September to replace a deteriorating 72 year old culvert. According to Beltrami County Engineer Tyler Koos, the replacement last fall was to be temporary as is the one just put in Tuesday.
A 30-year-old woman was injured in a rollover crash June 10 near Kelliher.
According to a Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office report: Erin Mary Lowe, address not listed, was injured when the 2006 Chrysler Pacifica she was driving rolled at about 6:22 p.m. on Kelliher Road Northeast, about two miles west of Kelliher.
Lowe was treated and released at North Country Regional Hospital following the accident.
Community pride is greatly shown in the city of Northome and the new liquor store, laundromat and city office establishment is something the city will be proud to show off.
In July of 2006 a devastating fire took the community’s liquor store and library. The laundromat located next door to the building sustained enough smoke damage to force that business’s doors to close as well.
Bitter temperatures, ice-covered roads and hazardous driving conditions all help make the History Channel’s Ice Road Truckers the captivating program that it is. Blackduck native Tim (or Timmy, as the community knows him) Freeman, Jr. is taking the driver’s seat as one of the daring rookie drivers during season three of the show.
From the back roads of Blackduck to the icy roads of Alaska, Freeman has always had a niche for thrills and adventure.

Stirred by patriotic music, the symbolism of a Blackduck American Legion service in the darkened high school auditorium and the words of young men and women who attended last year’s Legion Girls and Boys State events, a crowd ranging from babes in arms to elders with canes and crutches, joined in commemorating the sacrifices of men and women in the armed forces at Memorial Day services Monday.
The Kelliher City Council met in the council chambers at city hall for its regular meeting May 18.
Mayor Latterell called the meeting to order with all council members present along with city clerk Dianna Thurlow and and assistant Peggy Vollhaber.

Minnesota’s Department of Education has given formal approval to the Blackduck School District’s four-day school week to begin next September. The approval was for a one-year trial period and during the next year parents and the community at large will be asked to review the program’s effectiveness.
Veterans from all wars remembered Benjamin Priem served in the first World War and his grave is marked by the bronze plaque being cleared of grass and debris by Bob Klug, Sr. His work at Lakeside reflects several generations of family involvement in caretaking at the cemetery.
