Blackduck’s Annie Haws (left) is a state champion speaker. She took first place at the state speech contest in Original Oratory. Cooper Taylor took second place in Informative Speaking and and Jessica Lange took sixth place in Serious Interpretations of Prose.

Haws is state speech champion

Blackduck High School has its first state champion in any activity or sport in more than two decades. Annie Haws captured the title in the Original Oratory division at the state speech contest with her speech entitled The Last Child in the Woods.
A certain sign of spring
The surest sign that winter has actually come to an end is the beginning of Minnesota's other season - road work. Duane Steele, left and Patrick Juelson from the Beltrami County Highway Department were busy this past week sealing cracks on County Road 31 in Hines.

UND student from Kelliher earns aviation scholarship

Matthew Rabe, a junior at the University of North Dakota, has been awarded a $1,000 Merrimack Capital Company aviation training scholarship.

Finalists named for Kelliher superintendent

The Kelliher School Board met briefly April 16 to discuss the qualifications for various candidates for the superintendent’s position. Following the meeting, the board announced the names of the finalists.

Paul Bunyan Telephone recently made a $2,500 contribution to the Kelliher Fire and Rescue for upgrades needed with new mobile and base station digital radios.
Kelliher Health Fair is big success
More than 200 visitors attended the seventh annual Kelliher Health Fair April 15 in the Kelliher Old School gym. The event is sponsored by Community Resource Connections, Inc., Kelliher Resource Center and its advisory team, BiCAP and the Kelliher School. Above, a steady stream of people visited the Beltrami County Public Health/WIC program booth, manned by Kim Larson.

Northwoods Craft set to open for season

The Northwoods Craft Store in Northome will open its doors for the summer season May 5. Store hours will be from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Pat and Tom Nendick in their new home off the Hines Road enjoy an evening after he’d finished burning brush on the night following a church board meeting and before another full schedule of things yet to be done. Grandchildren, managing the new Hardware Hank store, and local involvement continue to rank high on both their agendas.
